Dr. Michael J. Sutherland

Dr. Sutherland is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Dr. Sutherland attended Louisiana State University where he graduated with a degree in Microbiology.  He then entered medical school in New

Orleans Louisiana at the LSU Medical Center.  Dr. Sutherland was the recipient of a US Air Force Health Professions Scholarship and after graduating from LSU Medical Center in 1998 he entered surgery residency training at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi.

During residency, Dr. Sutherland developed an interest in chest surgery and vascular surgery and competed an additional year of fellowship training at the Biloxi Veterans Administration Hospital specializing in Thoracic and Vascular Surgery.  Upon completion of his training, Dr. Sutherland transferred to Travis Air Force Base in northern California.  Dr. Sutherland started at Travis Air Force Base as a staff surgeon and has risen to the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at David Grant Medical Center, the base hospital.

Dr. Sutherland is an active member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).  He has served as a member of the Executive Committee and As Chair, of the Resident and Associate Society of the ACS.  Currently he is a member of the Committee for Young Surgeons of the College, representing the views, issues and concerns of the young surgeon in practice today.

Dr. Sutherland has served in Iraq at the Balad Air Force Theater Hospital.  While in Iraq, Dr. Sutherland was the Chief of Thoracic Surgery for the all US Military hospitals in Iraq.  He served on a team of 16 surgeons who together performed over 2000 life saving operations during a four month period in 2005. 

Dr. Sutherland enjoys working with surgical residents.  He has been involved in resident education his entire career. He has been recognized as the Outstanding Surgical Educator at David Grant Medical Center and was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at University of California, Davis.  

Dr. Sutherland moved to the Pine Bluff area with his wife and children at the end of his military career and is a member of the staff at Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
